Over the next several years Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC) 1B will face ongoing challenges in the areas of economic development, crime and safety, use of public space, and balancing growth with preservation of neighborhood character and history.
Starting in 2013, residents of the southwesternmost part of ANC 1B will be in a newly created single member district, 1B12. The saucepan-shaped district will include the intersection of 14th and U Streets (except the southwest corner) and be bounded from south to north by S and V Streets and from east to west by 12th and 14th Streets, with a "handle" extending westward to New Hampshire Avenue.
According to the District of Columbia Board of Elections and Ethics, four residents have announced their candidacy to represent SMD 1B12.
On Thursday, September 20, 2012, the Shaw Dupont Citizens Alliance and Meridian Hill Neighborhood Association will hold a candidates' forum, at the Thurgood Marshall Center, 1816 12th Street NW, starting at 7pm and lasting no longer than one hour. The purpose of this friendly forum will be for the residents to meet the candidates, hear about their ideas and discuss the issues of importance to them.
The format will be simple: candidates will introduce themselves and their agendas, the moderator will pose one question to each candidate and take questions from the floor. Candidates will also be allowed a closing statement, and may provide any campaign literature they wish at the event.
This event is open to the public. All are welcome to attend.
