Summer movie series ends Wednesday, September 26, 2012

Update (September 26, 2012, 5:04pm): The movie will not be shown tonight because of predictions for rain and thunderstorms.

The rain date is Wednesday, October 3, 2012.

This Wednesday the final movie of the summer, The Pelican Brief, will be screened at Harrison Recreation Center, on V Street between 13th and 14th Streets, NW.  The 1993 classic features Julia Roberts and Denzel Washington.  A law student writing a brief on the assassinations of two Supreme Court justices finds bullets flying in her direction and turns to a reporter for help. Featuring scenes in U Street's Ben's Chili Bowl

Local businesses Marvin, The Gibson, Patty Boom Boom, and Blackbyrd are providing a DJ starting at 7:00pm.  Screening begins after sundown, at around 8:00pm.  All movies are shown outdoors in a family-friendly environment and are free and open to the public. You may want to bring a blanket to sit on and a sweater or coat to keep warm.  Sorry, dogs are not allowed in the park.  Donations and sponsorships are accepted at movies.ustreet-dc.org and will benefit Friends of Harrison Recreation Center (part of U Street Neighborhood Association), a group of friends formed in 2009 that works directly with the DC Department of Parks and Recreation on capital improvements and design changes and enhancing park management and programming.

Candidate forum, ANC 1B single member district 1B12, Thursday, Sept. 20, 2012

Single member district 1B12, shaded in light blue.Over the next several years Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC) 1B will face ongoing challenges in the areas of economic development, crime and safety, use of public space, and balancing growth with preservation of neighborhood character and history.   

Starting in 2013, residents of the southwesternmost part of ANC 1B will be in a newly created single member district, 1B12.  The saucepan-shaped district will include the intersection of 14th and U Streets (except the southwest corner) and be bounded from south to north by S and V Streets and from east to west by 12th and 14th Streets, with a "handle" extending westward to New Hampshire Avenue.

On Thursday, September 20, 2012, the Shaw Dupont Citizens Alliance and Meridian Hill Neighborhood Association will hold a candidates' forum, at the Thurgood Marshall Center, 1816 12th Street NW, starting at 7pm and lasting no longer than one hour.  The purpose of this friendly forum will be for the residents to meet the candidates, hear about their ideas and discuss the issues of importance to them.   

Forum location, The Thurgood Marshall Center, 1816 12th Street NW.The format will be simple: candidates will introduce themselves and their agendas, the moderator will pose one question to each candidate and take questions from the floor.  Candidates will also be allowed a closing statement, and may provide any campaign literature they wish at the event. 

This event is open to the public.  All are welcome to attend.
