Future Little Free Library

Example of a Little Free Library. www.littlefreelibrary.orgPlease consider contibuting to the Little Free Library that neighbor Philip Vahab is setting up on the 1300 block of Florida Avenue, NW.

The Little Free Library is a movement sweeping communities and neighborhoods across the nation. With your help, we can have one in our community too. Little Free Libraries are charming 2-feet-by-2-feet structures that rest on a post, each containing 10 to 15 books. Take a book, leave a book. That is the simple concept.

The Little Free Library will be a fun way for our community to share books and to promote reading for our four neighborhood schools. The library will be located in the garden in front of Phil's house at 1312 Florida Avenue, NW. It will be the first Little Free Library in Washington, DC.

Future site of the first Little Free Library in Washington, DCPlease help promote reading and contribute to this great community project by making a "little" contribution to our Little Free Library!

You can hear more about it on NPR and watch a video on the sites below.

Agenda, next meeting: Tuesday Nov. 20, 2012

Chief of Police Cathy L. LanierThe next MHNA meeting will take place on Tuesday, November 20, 2012, in the Greater Washington Sports Alliance meeting room, 2300 14th Street, NW, from 7 until 8:30pm.

We are pleased to announce that the Chief of Police of the Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia, Cathy L. Lanier, has confirmed that she will attend the meeting. Chief Lanier graciously accepted our invitation to discuss the police response to, and to hear our views regarding, the ongoing and recently worsening problems of loitering, drug dealing and harassment of residents and business patrons on the 1400 block of W Street, NW.

Hon. Marisa Demeo, Judge, Superior Court of the District of ColumbiaWe also are pleased to announce that Hon. Marisa Demeo, Judge, Superior Court of the District of Columbia, will speak about the Community Court program. Community Court is a diversion program that allows qualifying first-time misdemeanor offenders to perform community service and attend educational programs, as an alternative to conviction and sentencing. The expectation is that such programs discourage repeat offenses. Judge Demeo's attendance will provide a rare opportunity to sit down with a judge and discuss our neighborhood's crime issues and their impact on the community and to learn about a potential long-term solution.

Agenda:

  1. Cathy L. Lanier, Chief of Police - ongoing problems at 14th & W Streets, NW
  2. Hon. Marisa Demeo, Judge, Superior Court of the District of Columbia - Community Court program
  3. Proposed letter to Perseus Realty regarding loading dock hours at 1325 W Street, NW
  4. Request to ANC 1B to change the monthly meeting day of the ABC Committee (which conflicts with MHNA monthly meetings)
  5. Treasurer's report
  6. Proposed dues structure for 2013 for apartment, condo and co-op buildings
  7. Announcements: Holiday reception, Dec. 18, 2012; MHNA board elections
