Meridian of American History

Before Meridian Hill Park was developed, it was a strategic overlook of the White House and Potomac River. That’s why it was co-opted in the Civil War for the Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry in 1861.

Columbia College, now George Washington University, that was built there at the time can be seen in the background. Check out this blog for an in depth post on the encampment.
