Meridian of Civil Rights

Meridian Hill Park became a safe place for gathering in the 60’s during the civil right movement. So many rallies were held there, Angela Davis called for the park to be renamed Malcolm X Park. Summer in the Parks program was developed in 1967 as an outlet for residents to enjoy music and events at the park.

More than 20,000 attended this first concert at Meridian Hill Park. Check out our other posts on the impact of the neighborhood of the Civil Rights movement through MLK’s assassination.
